Eleanor R. Wilk 1916 - 2012 CHICOPEE - Eleanor R. (Bird) Wilk, 96, a resident of the Arbors at 929 Memorial Drive in Chicopee and a former longtime resident of Prospect Street in the Fairview section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Thursday, August 23, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life from Wingate at West Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 28, 1916, a beloved daughter of the late Michael F. and Anna A. (McKnight) Bird. She was raised in Brooklyn, graduated from Saint Joseph High School and lived in the city for many years before moving to the Fairview section of Chicopee in 1950. She was employed for many years as a credit manager at the former W. T. Grants Department Store on Memorial Drive in Chicopee. Active in her faith, she was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee where she was a member of the Saint Anne Sodality and a longtime member of the Senior Choir. Eleanor was a member of the Fairview Golden Age Club and a longtime volunteer at the Willimansett Nursing Home in Chicopee where she received several awards for her service. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend of 53 years, John F. Wilk who was Called Home on February 2, 1990; and her loving daughter, Eleanor C. Hollister who was Called Home on September 13, 1998. She leaves: her loving children, Nancy E. Brown of Chevy Chase, MD, John M. Wilk and his wife, Peggy, of Grand Isle, VT and Paul R. Wilk of Chicopee; her loving son-in-law, Frederick Hollister of East Longmeadow; her seven cherished grandchildren; her six cherished great-grandchildren; her dear sister-in-law, Grace Bird of Queens, NY; and her many dear nephews and nieces including her devoted niece, Linda Desmarais of Chicopee. Besides her parents, husband and daughter, she was also predeceased by her dear brothers and sister, Stephen and James Bird and Gladys Kressy. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, August 26, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, August 27, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), the parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Stanislaus Cemetery, 800 Montgomery Street, Chicopee, MA 01013. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. For more details, please visit www.stpierrephaneuf.com
