Avis de décès de Dorothy-May Allan

Dorothy May Allan 1931-2014 The family sadly announces the passing of Dorothy "Dot" May Allan at the Saint John Regional Hospital on January 2, 2014. Dorothy was born on June 12, 1931 in Saint John, NB, and was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Folkins) Allan. She is survived by her brother Ronald (Betty) Allan of Saint John; nephews: William (Debbie) Allan, Mark (Donna) Allan, David (Sherry) Allan, Stephen (Dorothy-Ann) Allan and John (Patty) Allan; niece Christine (Frans) de Jong; many cousins and extended family members. She was predeceased by her brother Lewis (Dorothy) Allan of Saint John. Dorothy was Paymaster for the City of Saint John when she retired in 1986. She started with the City as a clerk-typist, working her way through various departments and positions over her 37 year career. In addition to her 37 years with the City, she simultaneously put in a 26 year career with the Canadian Naval Reserves. By 1960 she had worked her way through to an Officers Commission. That was unusual at the time as Officers were a rarity in the women’s naval reserve. Even rarer was her appointment to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander, only the second woman in Canada to earn that rank at that time. However, Dorothy’s distinguished military career did not end there. In 1973 she was appointed as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant Governor Hedard Robichaud. She was the first female to ever be appointed to this prestigious position. Dorothy was a member of Portland United Church. She loved sewing and did beautiful handwork until her arthritis interfered. She loved to spend time with family and friends and especially loved her cottage on the Belleisle. She is resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visitation on Monday, January 6, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Portland United Church on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at 11:00 am. Reception to follow at Brenan’s. Interment will take place in Ocean View Memorial Gardens at 2 pm. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be made to Portland United Church or to the memorial of the donor’s choice.
