Peacefully on October 20th, 2001 in her 57th year after a six-year battle with breast cancer. She leaves her beloved partner of 25 years, Janet Turnbull. Also survived by her loving sister Liz (Keith) Dickens of Guelph and stepsisters, Beverly Banting and Mary Jean Affleck, both of Toronto. Cherished aunt of Nancy (Warren) Edgar; Judi (Mark) Grebenc; Heather (Brian) Hume; Deborah Affleck; Donald Affleck; and the late Stephen Banting. Also survived by seven great nieces and great nephews. Dorothy's career as a social worker spanned 36 years before illness cut short her assault on the disease that ultimately took her life. She left her position as CEO of the Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute of Canada. She leaves behind many friends in the cancer control field across Canada and around the world. Her influence extended throughout the voluntary sector where she steadfastly believed in the value of volunteers and the power of the volunteer staff relationship. Her family and care-team would like to thank Dr.'s Ida Ackerman, Neil Iscoe, Richard Fralich, Kathy Pritchard, Leah Steinberg and the nurses at Toronto Sunnybrook Hospital C-3 and K-1E. A private family interment has been held at The Pool of Reflection, Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at the Eglinton St. George's United Church 35 Lytton Boulevard, Toronto on Tuesday October 30th, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers contributions to any unit of the Canadian Cancer Society or Trinity Home Hospice 25 King Street W. office 1102 Toronto, will be appreciated. Arrangements by Morley Bedford.
