->MERCER -- David James Leavitt, 46, of Belgrade died unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009.He was born June 19, 1962, in Waterville, the son of Richard and Shirley (Colangelo) Leavitt. David was a graduate of Waterville High School. David worked for many years at MaineGeneral Medical Center and Shaw's supermarket, both in Waterville, and most recently, at PFG in Augusta. He was employed most recently by UPS in Waterville, where he worked for more than 10 years.A member of Waterville Elks Lodge 905, David enjoyed weightlifting, snowmobiling and Jetskiing, and he had a fascination with antiques, the fondest being his '71 Oldsmobile 98, which was given to him by his father when David was just 16. He took great pride in restoring the big old boat affectionately named "Titanic," another passion of historical intrigue.David loved '70s music, and could proudly name most titles and artists of that era. Summer was David's favorite season, a time when many weekend trips were made to his family camp, Beno, in Benedicta. David was somewhat of a perfectionist who unselfishly toiled at "maxing out things" for his satisfaction as well as the enjoyment of others.David's love for his home and family was immeasurable. Favorite moments with his son, Keith, included playing hide-and-seek and monsters, singing and dancing to "Scooby Doo" and "Caillou," sliding, trips to the playground and fall fairs. David and Keith shared a love for the ocean, and trips to the beach were a favorite summer adventure.He was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Shirley (Colangelo) Leavitt; and a brother, Keith.He is survived by his wife, Pam (Merritt) Leavitt and one son, Keith Leavitt, both of Belgrade; two brothers, Brian Leavitt and fiancee Ann Grout, of Oakland, and Glenn Leavitt and wife Cindy, of Waterville; a sister, Debra Colangelo-Gilman and husband Steve Gilman, of Waterville; six nephews, Chris Leavitt and wife Lisa, of West Gardiner, Brandon Leavitt, of Waterville, Nickolas Leavitt, of Oakland, Aron Leavitt-MacLean and Matthew Leavitt-MacLean, of Fairfield, and Drew Curran, of Plymouth; niece Bethany Leavitt, of Waterville; in-laws the Rev. Francis and Virginia Merritt, of Waterville; brother-in-law Peter Merritt, of Lucerne; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.David was a friend to many. His charming wit and contagious smile warmed the hearts of all who knew him. The sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes is now a twinkling star in the nighttime sky, never to be forgotten. We love you, Gug. We love you, Big Daddy. We love you, Beasley. We love you, Dave.Visiting hours will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Veilleux Funeral Home. During the 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. visiting hours, the Waterville Elks will perform a short service. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at Oakland-Sidney United Methodist Church, followed by a celebratory luncheon. The burial will take place at the family lot at St. Francis Cemetery in the spring.In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations in David's memory be made to Maine Education Credit Union, 15 University Drive, Augusta, for Keith's education fund; or a charitable organization of your choosing.
