David Bartlett 'Joe' Holmes, 78DARIEN, CONN. - David Bartlett 'Joe' Holmes, a resident of Darien, Conn., passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005 at Stamford Hospital, in Stamford, Conn.Born Jan. 22, 1927 in Fairfield Center, he was the son of the late Harold M. Holmes Sr., and the late Elizabeth Bartlett Holmes. He was 78. Mr. Holmes attended the United Methodist Church of Fairfield Center and joined the Victor Grange at the age of 14, serving as sentinel. He graduated in 1944 from Lawrence High School in Portland. Mr. Holmes served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the occupation forces in Japan. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier retiring in 1987 after 25 years of service. He remained active with the N.A.L.C. and was a credit union trustee until his death.He was a 55-year member of Union Memorial Church in Glenbrook, Conn., where he was a deacon, archivist and a member of various committees. He volunteered with the American Red Cross, was a 32nd Degree Mason raised at Ivanhoe Lodge No. 107 A.F. & A.M. He enjoyed golf, bowling, flying light planes and going to the gym at the Tully Health Center in Stamford. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Corbin Holmes of Darien, Conn.; two sons, David B. Holmes of Marco Island, Fla., and Stephen E. Holmes of Darien; and one daughter, Amy C. LaValle of Norwalk, Conn. He is also survived by three grandchildren, David J. Holmes and Carrie B. Holmes, both of Marco Island, Fla., and Joseph David LaValle of Norwalk. He is survived by three sisters, Anna G. Holmes of Waterville, Mary Richardson Craigs of Cape Elizabeth, and Priscilla Shannon of Torrington, Conn. He is predeceased by a brother, Harold M.
