Dorothy Jane "DJ" CookAvl. - Dorothy Jane "DJ" Cook, 95, of Asheville, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at her home of natural causes.Born December 4, 1915, in Nashville, Tenn., she reared her family in Winnetka, Ill. and moved to Asheville in 1990 from Vero Beach, Fla. Her father was a Pulitzer Prize winner in editorial cartooning in 1961 and was the subject on Ralph Edwards' "This Is Your Life", also in 1961. Her mother was from Nashville and great-great-great granddaughter of John Sevier, Tennessee's first governor.DJ loved the game of bridge, became a Life Master in the 1950's, taught bridge for over 30 years and participated in national and international tournaments. She authored several bridge books including "Cook & Deal." In 1964 she was elected president of the American Bridge Teachers Association. DJ continued playing in international tournaments and often was the partner of world-known bridge players including Charles Goren, Sam Stayman, and Ely Culbertson. She retired from tournament play and teaching in the 1980's, although she continued playing bridge on a weekly basis.DJ is survived by her sister, Cherry Sue Jackson of Opelika, Ala.; her two sons, Kim Cook and his wife, Alice of Asheville and Carey Cook and his wife, Jan from Vero Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.A memorial will be held in the fall in Illinois.
