OBITUARY Dr. CHARLES McCAMMON ALLAN The death of the late Dr. Charles McCammon Allan occurred on April 24, 2009 at the Moncton Hospital at the age of eighty-one. Born in Montreal, Quebec, he was the only son of the late James and Margaret (McCammon) Allan. Charles earned his undergraduate degree in science, his medical training and a subsequent Masters in Science from McGill University. While at medical school (Class of '52), his academic achievements were recognized by the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Society, the only national medical society in the world. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). He completed his residency at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, prior to training in vascular surgery. He received further clinical training at the Montreal General Hospital, the Montreal Childrens' Hospital and the Royal Infirmary in Preston, England. Charles practiced vascular and general surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal until his move in 1983 to Miramichi, NB where he continued his surgical practice until his full retirement in 2005. Upon his retirement he moved to Sackville, NB. Charles was an avid reader with wide and varied interests. He was a life long learner, with an unsurpassable quest for knowledge that sustained him throughout his lifetime. He was a talented and prolific painter and loved to share his work with family and friends. He enjoyed working with wood, initially in large construction, then more recently with beautiful heirloom dollhouses and model ships. He enjoyed the many visits from his family, and his friends and colleagues from the Miramichi and beyond during his retirement years. Survived by his five children: Nancy Burridge (Ed) of Sackville, NB, Charles (Chip) Allan (Jennifer) of London, ON, Margaret Eddy (J. Allan) of Dartmouth, NS, James Allan (Elaine Beaudoin) of Montreal, QC and Mary-Lou Sauro (Stephen) of Newton, MA. and 16 grandchildren: David, Emily and Will Burridge, Lindsay, Jacqueline, Brooke and Jamie Allan, Charles, Katherine and John Eddy, Charles, Simon, Nicholas and Melanie Allan, Abigail and Benjamin Sauro. Charles was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his five children, Joyce (Gair) Allan (1991) and his second wife, Jane Morrissy Allan (2004). Special thanks to: Dr Tom McAvinue, Dr. Suzanne Hall-Losier and the nursing staff of the Moncton Hospital Geriatric Rehab Unit. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St., Sackville (506-364-1300) where a memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 28 at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in the Miramichi at a later date. Remembrances in Charles' memory may be made to the Friends of the Osler Library, McGill University; the Ralph Pickard Bell Library, Mount Allison University; the Newcastle Public Library, Miramichi, NB; or a charity of the donor's choice. www.jonesfuneralhome.ca.
