FITCHBURG -- Charles L. Curtis, 87, of 84 Seneca St., died Monday, July 7, in The Highlands, after an illness. Mr. Curtis was born on July 2, 1916, in Natick, the son of Humphry T. and Margaret Agnes (Gorman) Curtis and lived in Fitchburg. He was a 1935 graduate of St. Bernard’s High School where he starred in football, basketball and baseball. After high school, he attended Notre Dame University on a full scholarship for academics and athletics. Mr. Curtis was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was employed at the former General Electric in Fitchburg for 39 years before his retirement. He was a member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Bernard’s Church. He was also a member of the General Electric Quarter Century Club, St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Bernard’s Parish, Catholic Charities and Senior Core of Retired Executives. He was a founding member of the Serra Club and served as chairman for The Bishop’s Fund. He leaves three sons, C. Spencer Curtis and Philip J. Curtis, both of Fitchburg and Robert F. Curtis of Westminster; one daughter, Donna M. Kelley of Lunenburg; one brother, Harold Curtis of Lady Lake, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His wife, Dorothy (Carney) Curtis, died in 1991. CURTIS -- On July 7, Charles L. Curtis, 87, of Fitchburg. The funeral will be held Thursday, July 10 from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road. with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard’s Church, 240 Water St. Calling hours in the funeral home are Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Serra Club, c/o Norman Boudreau, I-C Federal Credit Union, 300 Bemis Road, Fitchburg, Mass. 01420; or may be left at the funeral home.
