HAYWARD, Charles GeorgePassed away peacefully on January 27, 2015 with his family by his side. Born March 16, 1926 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Only child of the late Percy Hayward and Josephine Cooper. Predeceased by his wife of 55 years Mary Elaine Foster and son John. He will be greatly missed by sons Doug and David, daughter Mary Ann (Joey Bush) and granddaughters Kelly and Robin Lapointe. Charlie spent his youth in Ottawa where he graduated from Glebe Collegiate High. He then attended McGill University where he graduated with a BEng in 1949. While attending McGill, Charlie was a proud member of the McGill Redmen hockey team as well as a lifelong member of the Phi Delta Theta House along with his brother-in-law, the late Rod Foster. Following McGill, Charlie worked for more than three decades for Drummond McCall in Lachine. Charlie maintained a passion for hockey throughout his life. He coached hockey for many years in Lachine and Beaconsfield-Kirkland as well as being one of the original Lachine Old-Timers. He served on the executive of Hockey Lac St. Louis, Quebec Minor Hockey Association, Quebec Ice Hockey Federation and the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association and was instrumental in establishing the National Coaching Certification Programme. In 1983 he was presented by Hockey Lac St. Louis with the prestigious Jack Tero Memorial Award in recognition of his contributions to minor hockey. Loyal to his McGill Redmen roots, he helped form the Friends of McGill Hockey where he served as President. Charlie was honorary Captain of the Redmen when they were crowned national champions in 2012. He was very proud of the dedicated student-athletes who came through the McGill programme and their commitment to excellence. Charlie was also an avid golfer and was an active member at Whitlock Golf C.C. for over five decades and served on many committees including his term as Club Captain. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Sincere thanks to the staff at the Chateau-Sur-La-Lac for their devotion and care. Visitation will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Rideau Funeral Home, 4275 Sources Blvd, Dollard-des-Ormeaux. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: McGill University – The Charles Hayward Redmen Hockey Fund, Donation and Record Services, McGill University, 1555 Peel Street, 9th Floor, Montreal, Quebec , H3A 3L8 or to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
