PORTSMOUTH — Charles "Bud" Gallagher, 82, of Portsmouth, died peacefully in the company of loved ones on Sunday, April 11, 2010 after a brief illness. Bud was a longtime resident and business owner in Portsmouth. He started his first bicycle shop in his parent's basement at age 13 which went on to become Gallagher's Sport Center and P.J. Gallagher's. He also started Gallagher's Tire Center, Gallagher's Trophies, Team Sales and numerous other entrepreneurial ventures. He continued to work daily at Gallagher's Place Shopping Center on Islington Street, where his presence will be missed by all. Bud took a hiatus from work at his store to serve his country in World War II, where he was aboard the Naval vessel USS Worthington.An avid golfer, Bud was a member of Portsmouth Country Club for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce and served many years with Portsmouth Rotary Club.Bud is survived by his wife of 57 years, Paula (Mangano) Gallagher; his son, Paul Gallagher; daughter, Jaye Morton and her husband, Robert Morton; four grandchildren, Kyle and Sean Morton, Ryan Gallagher, Ashley Lockwood and her husband, Casey Lockwood. Bud was predeceased by his brother, Robert Gallagher.Visiting hours will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home-Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 15 at Corpus Christi Parish at Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St., Portsmouth. Family flowers only.
