Charles Edward Briggs, 66, of Florence, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his home.Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Center Star United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Mickey Davis and the Rev. Randy Burbank will officiate. Burial will follow in Center Star Cemetery.Charles was preceded in death by his father, Virgil H. Briggs.Mr. Briggs was an educational speaker. He had earned a Masters of Guidance in Counseling from UNA. He served in the Alabama National Guard and was a member of Center Star United Methodist Church.He was a member of the Echota Cherokee Tribe and was given a Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to teaching Cherokee heritage at local schools for the past 20 years.He is survived by a daughter, Karen Briggs Brown and husband, Bradley, Huntsville; mother, Birdie Briggs, Florence; granddaugthers Natalie Ashton Brown and Kathryn Rebecca Brown; and former wife, Wilda Briggs.Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.
