Carl Edward Mann INMAN, SC-- Carl Edward Mann, 88, died Monday, January 3, 2011, in Inman, SC. Carl was born April 1, 1922, in Blue Diamond, KY, the son of the late Critton Mann and Nancy Ann Vanderpool Mann. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Leoma Mae Cook Mann after 63 years of marriage. He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Jack Mann of Crawford, CO, Linda Freyer of Spartanburg, SC, Loretta Maynard of Point Pleasant, WV, Willie Mann of Freeport, TX, and Will Mann of Lake Jackson, TX. He is also survived by two brothers, Ray Mann and Homer Mann of Cincinnati, OH. "Pop" left 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Carl served in the Marines during World War II on Guadalcanal and other islands during the New Georgia Campaign. He served with the Raiders and was awarded the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart. He spent forty-four years as a coal miner. He started in West Virginia with Boone County Coal as a "hand loader" and worked his way up to Mine Superintendent. He finished his career as General Mine Foreman for Kaiser Steel in New Mexico. He loved the horse races, camping, hunting, and a good poker game. Carl was of the Catholic faith and a wonderful father. He earned the respect of all who knew him. Services will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Handley Funeral Home, Danville. Burial will follow in Memory Gardens, Madison with military graveside rites performed by Daniel Boone VFW Post 5578, Madison, WV.
