Arthur Robert Andersen, 84, of North Las Vegas , Nev., and formerly of the Hudson Valley, died March 7, 2013, at Nathan Adelsen Hospice in Las Vegas while surrounded by his family.He was born July 26, 1928, in Brooklyn to parents Arthur and Ruth Bertha Jacob Pettersen Andersen, according to Morse Funeral Home, which is handling his funeral arrangements and published his obituary.At 17, he enlisted with the Navy and served as a radio operator during World War II and Korea. Following his discharge, he met famed underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau and was inspired to fabricate his own diving suit, making the diving helmet in his father's brass foundry. He and his brother Ron did salvage diving in Long Island and New York City. He then worked for New York Telephone until the early 1970s, when he transferred to Salt Lake City. While there, he installed telephone systems for NORAAD. He then transferred to Las Vegas in 1990, where he retired after 38 years of service.He was a glider pilot for Steve Bennis at Randall Airport in Middletown. As a glider pilot and a member of the Explorer's Club, he conducted experiments in gliders for NASA .Survivors include his wife, Marjorie A. Morse Andersen; three sons, Darrell Andersen of Goshen , Robert Andersen and his companion, Heidie, of Wappingers Falls and Jamie Andersen and his companion, Robin, of Portland, Ore.; three granddaughters, Kaylee, Kerri and Kim; and numerous nieces and nephews.Family and friends gathered March 21 at Living Springs Lutheran Church in North Las Vegas for a celebration of his life. Following cremation, his funeral will take place April 20 at Morse Funeral Home, 33 Railroad Ave., in Middletown. Burial in the family plot will follow at Wallkill Cemetery in Middletown.In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Nathan Adelson Hospice, 4141 Swenson St., Las Vegas, NV 89119.
