Virginia Harries 1930-2012 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Ginny Harries reports her sudden death by heart failure in the early morning of August 25, 2012. She was the only child of Alice and Atherton Hastings, who after many addresses, including Moscow, settled in Florence, Alabama, when she was thirteen. Her undergraduate studies were at Oberlin College, Ohio, where her lifelong passion for folklore and cultural anthropology was born. After completing her M.A. in Social Anthropology, she lived for several years in Point Barrow, Alaska, working as a clerk in the local hospital and studying culture change in the First Nations people. While at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, she met her future husband Hinrich Harries. The two were married on September 16, 1963. Two years later they moved to Sackville, New Brunswick. She loved living in Sackville and its history, people and landscape. As well as teaching at Mount Allison for a time, she became an active force in the Sackville Historical Society, the Sackville Art Association, the Sackville Public Library and numerous committees of the United Church. Yorkshire 2000, the popular historical Walking Tour of Sackville and the 1987 exhibitions Social Times in Old Sackville were among the long list of events she helped to organize. She leaves behind a husband, Hinrich Harries, son John Harries and daughter-in-law Jane Cheeseman in Edinburgh, Scotland and a daughter, Rebecca Harries in Sherbrooke Quebec. The family would like to especially thank Janet and Tony Erskine, Mariette Hoffland, Beth and Matt Holmes, Corinna and John Power, Dr. Harold Popma and Tina Hicks for all of their friendship and support through the years. Arrangements are in the care of the Jones Funeral Home, 70 Bridge St. Sackville (506-364-1300). Services will be announced in the near future. www.jonesfuneralhome.ca From Hard is the Journey by Li Po At peace I drop a hook into a brooklet, At once I’m in a boat but sailing sunward… So when a breeze breaks waves, Bringing fair weather, I set a cloud for sails, cross the blue oceans!
