MUCKLESTON, Sylvia With sadness we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Sylvia Muckleston, recently of Calgary and formerly of Acme, Alberta, at 88 years seven months, on the 10th of April 2008. Born September 11 in 1919 on the farm in Lougheed, she was the youngest child of four and the only daughter of Jack and Jessie Burden. Having taken her early education in the Groveland and Lougheed schools, she moved to Edmonton, graduating in 1939 from Normal School prepared for her life-time career in teaching. She taught in several small country schools, culminating in her return to her home town where she met her future husband, Art, who managed the Atlas Lumber Yard. Married in 1948, they moved to Strome in 1949 following Art's transfer. Their family was started in 1952 with Jim, Janet in 1955, Nancy in 1956 and Rita in 1961. Their arrival in Acme in 1956 was due to Art's transfer to manage the Atlas Lumber Yard, later to become Revelstoke Building Materials. Of the choices offered to them, Acme was Sylvia and Art's choice due to the beautiful trees that lined the streets and the prosperity of the town as evidenced by the five grain elevators. She returned to her life-time love of teaching in 1964, to enjoy hours and years spent with her students until retirement in 1983. All of her students and their parents will remember the projects she created to instill the love of learning in them through the years. Even after retirement, Sylvia continued in the school in various capacities including substituting, covering maternity leaves, tutoring, and volunteering until her health deteriorated in 1995. She continued her involvement with projects she had started earlier such as the Community Christmas Card and Library Bulletin Board, also continuing her beautiful calligraphy on school certificates and in Bibles for births, marriages and confirmations. Her creative art has graced many community logos, including the stylized A in the Acme sign that stood for many years marking the entrance to the town she called home. In 1993, Art's health required his hospitalization in Trochu, where he passed away in January of 1994. Because her son, Jim, was working in Acme at the time and was able to spend lunch times with Sylvia, she was able to continue in her own home. Jim's passing in 1998 left a void in Sylvia's days which she tried to fill with community involvement and friends. Due to deteriorating health conditions, Sylvia moved to Calgary in August 2002, initially living with her daughter-in-law, Kathy, then moving to Whitehorn Village, later to Brentwood Nursing Home where she resided at the time of her passing. Sylvia was predeceased by her infant grandson, Deryk in April of 1986, husband Art in January of 1994, and son Jim in December 1998, as well as her siblings Peter, David and Ian. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Kathy Muckleston of Calgary (children: Donna and Joe Wackerbauer and their son, Nik, of Summerland, BC; Rick Gee, Bob Gee, and Sherry Muckleston of Calgary); daughter, Janet and Steve Snydmiller (children: Kendra and Larry Lundrigan and their son, Jacob of Fort McMurray; Kelsey Snydmiller and Lindy Snydmiller of Plamondon, and Stuart Snydmiller of Wandering River); daughter, Nancy Dennis of Ponoka (children: Damien and Sara Dennis, and their children Dexter, Masen, and Ellissa; Devon Dennis and Amy Huston; Darius Dennis and Amber Potts and their children Eathan, Eden, and Ereryk; Desirae Dennis and Drew Dennis, all of Ponoka); daughter, Rita and James McCrimmon of Airdrie, their children Aaron, Amber, and Allison McMahon and Jordan and Derek McCrimmon. Service is to be held at the Acme United Church in Acme, Alberta at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, and Interment to follow at the Acme Cemetery. Arrangements through First Memorial Funeral Home in Calgary. Donations to be made to charities of one's choice. Published in the Calgary Herald from 4/14/2008 - 4/15/2008
