Robert A. Mack Robert A. Mack CONCORD Robert A. Mack, 87, died on January 21, 2010, after a short illness. Robert attended Harvard College, graduating in 1944. In his sophomore year he went on a blind date with Caroline, a Wellesley College freshman, who became his wife. They lived in the Boston area initially, for most of that time in Concord, where they were original residents of Conantum. Then they lived another 30 years at their cherished "cottage," Altamont, in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa. After Caroline's death in 2004 Robert lived in Litchfield and New Milford, Conn., with his partner, Elizabeth Paisley. Robert was one of the principal engineers on the Harvard Cyclotron, which began operation in 1949 and remained in service for medical purposes more than 50 years later; the control room of the Cyclotron is now preserved in the Harvard Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments. Among many other engineering positions, most with Harvard or MIT associations, Robert was the founding director of the communications division of MITRE, and played a role in setting up America's Cold War defensive systems. In later years Robert became involved with computers and remained active in sophisticated coding work into his 80s. He leaves his partner, Elizabeth (Stanton) Paisley, two sons from his marriage to Caroline, Robert in Boston and Stephen in Chicago, Stephen's wife, Noralee, and their son, Andrew.
