OBITUARY JOSEPH WALLACE Passed away Sunday, December 18, 2005 of natural causes. Born July 30, 1915, in Fifeshire, Scotland, immigrated to Canada in 1921, lived for four years in Burlington, Ontario, Canada and then moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 1971 he moved his principal residence to Naples, Florida. His first career was in the publishing business, when in 1934 he took a job with the MacLean-Hunter Publishing Company, Limited. He rose through the ranks of Salesman, Crew Manager, Sales Supervisor and Ontario Subscription Manager in Montreal and Toronto. In 1942, he was named Advertising Sales Manager of Plant Administration, one of the MacLean-Hunter Publications. In 1946, he purchased Holliday Publications Limited, in Montreal and its four business/trade papers. From the original takeover, the company, renamed Wallace Publishing Limited, was built up to nineteen business papers and one consumer magazine. In 1962, he sold Wallace Publishing to MacLean-Hunter Publishing Company, Limited, and Southam Business Publications, Limited, both of Canada. In 1947, he established Wallace Press Limited, which he operated until he moved permanently to Naples, Florida. In 1955, with his brother, Thomas Wallace, he purchased a shoe manufacturing company in Montreal, which was operated as Wallace Footwear until it was sold in 1969 to Savage Shoe Company of Canada, Limited. In 1957, he purchased a majority interest in Standard Photo-Engraving Company Limited and then merged this company to form National Standard Photo-Engraving Limited. In 1960, he started Consolidated Realty Corporation in the real estate construction and development business in Eastern Canada, in partnership with the late Jules Laberge. This was the forerunner of considerable real estate development in Canada and the United States. In 1965, he established Tri-Mount Inc. in Florida to build the Del Mar Club in Naples. He then established Walbro, Inc. a U.S. subsidiary, which built Embassy Suites and a number of other apartment projects in Naples. In 1956, he purchased a major interest in Naples Service & Supply, Inc. In 1971, he and another business associate established United Diesel & Equipment Co., Inc. with headquarters in Fort Myers, Florida. He was chairman of Walbro Investment, Limited. He was active in a number of associations, believing in service to one's community and country, and is a member of several organization and clubs. He was past President of The Canadian Business Press and served on the Board of the Periodical Press of Canada and as a member of National Business Papers Association in the United States. He was a past member of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, The Kiwanis Club of Montreal and The Metropolitan Club of New York. He was a member of The Gananoque Golf Club in Canada, The Royal Poinciana Golf Club in Naples, Fl., The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, N.C., The Beaconsfield Golf & Country Club in Montreal and St. Georges Golf & Country Club in Toronto. His hobbies were golfing, hunting, fishing, and boating. He was married to the late Lillian (nee Adams) Wallace and they had three sons: James Wallace and the late John Wallace, both of Naples, Florida; William Wallace of Ganonoque, Ontario, Canada; ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His late wife, Lillian E. Wallace was born in Montreal and was a fifth generation Canadian. She was a mother and homemaker all of her married life. One of the Montreal newspapers said that she was "The Pearl Mesta" of Canada for the dinner parties she hosted at home; "not only entertaining, but the food served both interesting and very appetizing." Her husband's girth was an attestation to this...Joe Wallace always loved a sense of humor. A memorial service will be held Friday, December 23 at 11 a.m. at Naples Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Joseph's memory to the Naples Community Hospital or Cleveland Clinic of Naples. Published in the Montreal Gazette from 12/21/2005 - 12/22/2005
