JOSEPH EDOUARD ST. HILAIRE On Saturday, October 25, 2003 at St. Boniface General Hospital, Joseph Edouard St. Hilaire of St. Boniface passed away at the age of 87 years. Joseph leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 64 years, Irene (Firman), daughters, Patricia (Rene Bazinet), Laraine, Elaine (Lucien Desmarais), Janine (David Maksymchuk) and Denis (Elaine Giasson); grandchildren, Nicole, Jacques, Christine, Daniel, Michele, Richard, Andrew, Aimee, Emilie, Erik and Dominique; and seven great-grandchildren all of whom he loved dearly. He was predeceased by his son Roger (Brenda Telford) in 1999. Joseph was born in St. Pierre and spent most of his life in St. Boniface graduating from St. Boniface College in 1934. He was actively involved in the community, serving as the founding President of the St. Boniface Historical Museum, Grand Knight and District Deputy for the Knights of Columbus, was a charter member of "la Caisse populaire de St. Boniface" and was Alderman for the City of St. Boniface for 13 years as well as Mayor of the City of St. Boniface in 1968. The extended family will also remember Joseph as the researcher and curator of the St. Hilaire geneology. Joseph had a long career as 1st class Stationary Engineer working for 38 years at Misericordia Hospital as Plant Superintendent. He enjoyed music, cooking, gardening, camping, fishing and stamp collecting. He was an avid traveller and corresponded with people he had met all over the world. It gave him great joy to comfort and support others through his many years of service to Meals on Wheels. He had great faith in God and reflected this through prayers, reciting the Holy Rosary, and supporting his church for many years. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Cathedrale, 190 de la Cathedrale, with Fr. Paul Campeau celebrant. A private family interment will be held at a later date at the Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens. The family would like to thank the Emergency staff at St. Boniface Hospital and particularly Dr. Tober and Dr. Rush, as well as nurses Heather and Diana for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba or to the Food Depot Fund at Holy Cross Church. "Dear Dad, Dear Grandpa" You took us camping, taught us to love the outdoors, to be curious, to bait a hook, to sing, to laugh and always love life. We thank you for our sense of adventure.
