Jan (John) van der Veer ---- passed away peacefully on Friday, July 23, 2004 at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre at the age of 88. John was predeceased by his parents, Wytze and Anke; infant twin brothers; brother, Sjoerd; and sisters, Dina nvJager and Renske Vandervelde all of Holland. John is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Henny; and three sons, Wytze (Vic) (Pat) of Merseyside, England and grandchildren, Eshelle and Sarah of Port Coquitlam, BC; Cecil of Stonewall, MB and grandchildren, Corey (Amanda Pottery), Carrie (Ryan) Summerton all of Winnipeg, MB and Crystal (Nathan Peers) of Selkirk, MB; Andy (Esther) and grandchildren, Steven and Kurt, Regina, SK; great-grandchildren, Aiden Summerton, Nathan and Kaylee Peers; brother, Frits; and sisters: Aaltje Witteveen, Doetje Katz, Sietske Vandervelde, Hennie Douwsma and Pietje Visser all of Holland. John was raised and schooled in Holland. At the age of 13 he started working on a farm. He served in the Dutch Army from 1933 –35. When at home, he farmed. He was recalled in 1939 and served until August 1940 when he returned to farming. He met Henny Van Der Veer on one of his many trips to her father’s library. John and Henny were married August 7, 1947 and had one son, Wytze before immigrating to Peers, Alberta in 1951 where John worked as a lumberjack. In 1952, they moved to Luscar, Alberta where John worked at the coal mining company sorting coal. Then in 1959 onto Wetaskiwin, Alberta where he received his papers for a heavy-duty mechanic. In 1965 John and the family made a final move to Regina and he worked as a heavy-duty mechanic at Prairie Machine, Custom Trucks and lastly at White Trucks until 1982 when he retired at age 67. Then his time was taken up by his favourite hobbies of carpentry, gardening, bus tours and traveling to Holland, B.C., Alberta, Manitoba and of late, to England to visit his son. The family wishes to thank the staff of the Regina General Hospital, Pasqua Hospital, William Booth Home and Wascana Rehabilitation Centre for the care given to John during numerous recent visits. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the Regina Funeral Home, Hwy #1 East. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, 1545 McAra St, Regina, SK S4N 6H4. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306-789-8850)
