James Gilbert Caldwell, Dartmouth Born at Summerside , Prince Edward Island , Canada 79, passed away suddenly Friday, June 26, 2009, at home in Dartmouth. He was born in Summerside to the late Winnifred (Woodington) and Gilbert Caldwell. He was a member of the Armed Forces for many years serving in the navy and air force. During retirement he resided in Chatham, N.B., for a number of years until the passing of his wife, Lorraine (Landry) Caldwell. Later he moved to Dartmouth, wintering in Davenport, Florida. He had an avid interest in harness racing, golf and gardening. He is survived by his son, James, Mississauga; sisters, Margaret Woodside, Kensington; Betty Avery, Don Mills; brother, Eric of Ontario; sister-in-law, Donalda (Ron) Hughes; and Landry brothers-in-law, Harold, Charlottetown; Ward, California; Albert (Lorraine), Miscouche; Floyd, Calgary; and Richard, Georgetown. Also by his loving companion, Ferne Caldwell; and special nieces and nephews, Arden (Caldwell) (Gary Morgan) Wheatley, Doug (Laurie) Caldwell, Blaine (Veronica) Caldwell, Cynthia (Caldwell) Wynnyk, Judith (Donald) Stavert, Barbara Dundas and Karen (Landry) Darcy. He was the best “Poppie” to Ferne and James Wynnyk and special great-uncle to many. He will be remembered for his quick smile and wit and deeply missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth, at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.
