HELEN E. PARRIS Helen E. Parris, of RR 2, Emo, Ont., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998 while a patient at the Mayo Medical Center in Rochester, Mn. She was born Oct. 5, 1921 in Janesville, Wis., the only child of Dr. and Mrs. Fred B. Welch. Helen has been a resident of Finland Woods, her home, for a number of years. She was an avid and devoted gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables. To this endeavour she devoted many years. She frequently exhibited her flowers in the Emo Fair, and over the years was awarded many ribbons. Helen also was a musician and gave freely of her time and talents in performing with her violin for numerous local events. Dr. Parris, before her retirement, served as a professor at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. During her professional career, she was a frequent guest speaker and the author of numerous articles dealing with development in Third World countries. Shortly before her death, Helen had completed a book which deals with her experiences in India and a criticism of development in Third World countries. She was a founding member of Finland Woods Learning Centre, which is devoted to community and sustainability of the environment. Helen and her husband, Joe, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year, and she leaves him as her sole survivor. A memorial service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church in Emo on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please support the St. George’s Anglican Church Food Bank or the Emo Hospital.
