ENGEL, Gerald Robert On August 19, 2007 in Victoria. Dad was born on November 6, 1912 in Edmonton and lived there until the age of 21. He was predeceased by our loving mother, Bertha Irene in 1994; his brother, Douglas and sister, Gladys and is survived by daughters, Verna and husband, Robert Cheramy of Kamloops, Geri ("Deanie") and husband, Patrick Caporale of Cowichan Bay; granddaughters, Michelle (Nathan) of St. John's, NL, Lisa (Scott) of Courtenay, Paula (Todd) of West Vancouver and Jennifer of St. John's, NL; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Justin and Olivia. Dad will be fondly remembered by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing his kind generosity and delightful humour. The three main passions in Dad's life were the outdoors, his family and the RCMP. During his youth he was an avid outdoorsman, spending many wonderful times canoeing, skiing and climbing in the Canadian Rockies. Dad had a long and distinguished career in the RCMP, serving from 1934 to 1969 in the Provinces of B.C., Saskatchewan and Ontario. He married Mom in 1941 at Swift Current, Saskatchewan. This began 53 years together during which Mom served as Dad's indispensable "second man" in the RCMP. During his time in the RCMP, Dad had the privilege of attending the FBI National Academy in Washington, DC in 1955 as well as being a part of the policing transition when Newfoundland became a Province in 1949. He retired in Victoria having achieved the rank of Assistant Commissioner. Dad lived his retirement as he lived his entire life with dignity, integrity, compassion and wisdom. The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Dennis Francis and his staff. Special gratitude to Drs. Kolodziejczyk and Blair, all the Nurses in emergency at Royal Jubilee Hospital and to Phung and Misha at Hospice. Also, thanks to Jennifer Balderston, Community Care Nurse and the staff at Beacon Home support. To all the staff and residents of the Wellesley our deep gratitude for your care and love of our Dad. A Service of Remembrance will be conducted from MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, on Friday, September 14th at 1:00 p.m., the Reverend Larry Greig officiating. Interment to take place at a later date next to Mom at the RCMP Cemetery in Regina. Flowers are gratefully declined, tributes, if desired, may be made to the Victoria Hospice Society, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, B.C. V8R 1J8 or to the charity of one's choice.
