George Walter Caldwell, 77, a resident of Barefoot Bay, formerly of Kingston, Mass., died Jan. 19, 2010. He was born Aug. 29, 1932, in South Weymouth, Mass. He was a disabled Army veteran from the Korean War. In his early years, he worked as a welder at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. He later opened his own business, Pine Croft Furniture Refinishing in Kingston, from where he retired to Florida in 1994. He was a longtime member of the Cold Springs Athletic Club in Plymouth, Mass., an active member of the American Legion, former member of the Harold F. Govoni Post 387 in Kingston and had many hobbies including metal detecting, boating, antique auctions, raising pigs, fishing and clamming. He loved to dance and feed wild birds. While in Florida, he enjoyed helping Joy Liddy of Sunshine Rentals and Sales of Barefoot Bay and socializing with many dedicated friends. Mr. Caldwell was the loving brother of Winifred Conner Knight, Bruce M. Caldwell and the late Herbert L. Caldwell Jr., Mildred E. Sloane and Joseph R. Caldwell. Mr. Caldwell is survived by his former wife, Joan (Whalen) Caldwell; and his loving children, Alice C. Elwell, her husband Glenn, and their children, Joanne and Lily of Middleboro, Mass.; George W. Caldwell III of Kingston, and his children, Amy and George of Plymouth; Michael J. Caldwell of Pennsylvania and his daughter Beth of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; Rhonda D. Johnson, her husband Peter, and their son, Jesse George of Kingston; and Bernadette MacDonald and her children, Renee and Dylan of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Leah, Alexis and Anthony; many nieces and nephews; and his longtime companion, Carol Lewis of Florida. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a veterans organization or Lung Cancer Research Foundation, 845 Third Ave., 6th Floor, New York, NY 10022, lungcancerresearchfoundation.org/donate.htm. During Mr. Caldwells illness, his son George was a devoted caretaker who eased a difficult time for his father and siblings. Memorial services will be held at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 234 Pleasant St., South Weymouth, Feb. 6, at 11 a.m. Services were held in Barefoot Bay, Jan. 24.
