Francis J. Mack, retired Chief of Police for the Town of Holbrook, and a lifelong Holbrook resident, passed away after a brief illness April 22, 2014, at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of the late Marjorie (Keith) Mack, whom he married in 1947. He was the son of the late and former Selectman Patrick Mack and Mary (Sullivan) Mack of Holbrook. He was a graduate of Sumner High School, Class of 1940, and graduated from the State Police Academy in Framingham. During World War II, he served with the 48th Combat Engineers in Africa, Italy and France. Wounded in Italy, he was awarded the Purple Heart, a Presidential Citation, the Good Conduct Medal and a Distinguished Unit Citation. After the war he returned to Holbrook where he was a call firefighter. Later, he became the first patrolman for the town of Holbrook in 1950, a safety officer in 1960, the Acting Chief in 1967 and the Chief of Police in 1968. He served as the Chief of Police from 1968 to 1983. He was a former member of the Massachusetts Police Chiefs Association, the Massachusetts Police Association and the Norfolk County Prosecutors Association. He was a lifetime communicant of St. Joseph Church in Holbrook. He is survived by his two sisters, Marie Spieler and Therese Doherty, both of Holbrook; as well as many nieces and nephews, and faithful friends. He will be reposing at the Cartwright Funeral Home, 68 South Franklin Street (Rte. 37), in Holbrook, until 9 a.m. Monday, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Church in Holbrook. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Sunday will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Burial will take place in the Mayflower Hill Cemetery, Taunton.
