GREENFIELD - Eleanore M. (Short) Ballard, 94, died on Saturday (4-11-2015) at Buckley Health Care Center. Born on March 16, 1921 in Greenfield, she was the daughter of Harry W. and Minnie (Eaton) Short, and a descendant of Samuel Eaton who was on the Mayflower when it landed at Plymouth in 1620. Eleanore was the widow of Joseph W. Ballard, Jr, who predeceased her on April 11, 1982. She was well-known to many as ""Babe"" or ""Mrs. B"".Eleanore attended Nasson College in Springvale, Maine, studying Home Economics and graduating with the Class of 1941. She served proudly in the U.S. Navy from September 1943 to December 1945. Upon returning to Greenfield, she worked in several food service capacities. She was a dietician at Franklin County Public Hospital, Director of Food Services for Greenfield Public Schools, and served the needs of Franklin County Tech School, Church Street Home for Women and various nursing homes. After retirement from food services, she worked for several years at Wilson's Department Store. She was on the Board of Organized Work at the FCPH, and served on committees of the MSPCC Thrift Shop on Chapman Street and the gift shop at the hospital. She was a member of the local society of Daughters of the American Revolution and a staunch Republican and long-time member of the Franklin County Women's Republican Club. She enjoyed genealogy, reading, knitting, sewing and gardening. Survivors include her two sons and their families: Geoffrey E. and Heidi Coughlin of Pilot, NC and their children Kiersten and Garrett, and Kevin and Kathy Coughlin of Greenfield and their children Shaun, Kyle, and Brodie and two great-grandchildren: Jamison and Madeline Coughlin, as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, Eleanore was predeceased by her brothers: Harry Short, Jr., William Short and Donald Short, her sister Mary O'Connell and her nephew Michael O'Connell, whom she spent many happy times with.Funeral services for Eleanore will be on Saturday (4/18/15) at 11 a.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield, with burial to follow in Green River Cemetery. There will be an hour of visitation with family prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franklin County Survival Center, 96 4th Street, Turners Falls, MA 01376 or to MSPCC, 9 Sullivan Road, Holyoke, MA 01040.
