Charles A. Dunphy 1919-2012 ST. PETERSBURG, FL - Charles A. Dunphy, 93 passed away after a short illness on Tuesday, August 7 in St. Petersburg, FL. He was born in New York City in 1919 and studied art as a young man in the city. Charles served in the U. S. Army as a paratrooper during World War II and made combat jumps in the Pacific Theater, principally New Guinea. He was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. After the war, he settled in the Gardner, MA area where he worked in the furniture industry as a carpenter. When the New England winters became too much for him in his later years, he moved to St. Petersburg, FL. In retirement, Charles enjoyed art, photography and listening and dancing to music from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Charles leaves two daughters, Maureen Paul of Belchertown and Kathleen Hunter of Wheeling, IL. He also leaves two granddaughters, Michelle Chastain of Chattanooga, TN and Melissa Diaz of Hobart, IN, and a great grandson, Grey Chastain and a great granddaughter, Siobhan Diaz. He was predeceased by his wife Irene (Hill), and his three sons Charles, Jr., Dennis and David. A calling hour will be Monday, August 13 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Beers & Story Belchertown Funeral Home, 10 Maple St., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Francis Church at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in South Cemetery.
