VAN BALKOM, Albert - Peacefully with his family by his side, at Summit Place in Owen Sound, on Tuesday morning, December 30th, 2008. Albert Gerardes Van Balkom, of Owen Sound, fondly known as “Handsome Dutchie“ in his 78th year. Dearly beloved husband of the late Antonia Van Balkom (nee Van Doren) for 54 years. Loving father of Anne Paterson and her husband, Jay, of Waterloo, Josie Moore and her husband, Brian, of Chatsworth, Ted Van Balkom and his wife, Cathy, of Hamilton and Rick Van Balkom and his wife, Heidi, of Wiarton. Proud grandfather of Josh (Lobat), Ryan, Rachel, Jason (Shelley), Matthew (Robin), Anisha, Maddison, Dana, Jarret (Rebecca), Maitland, Jamine and great grandfather of Luke & Gavin. Albert is survived by his siblings, Jan Van Balkom and his wife, Anneke, Theo Van Balkom and his wife, Annie, Huub Van Balkom and his wife, Mia, Nellie Hazenberg and her husband, Albert, Ria Hillings and her husband, Rhien, Riky Koppen and Lies Gevers. Predeceased by his parents, Theodore and Johanna Van Balkom; his one sister, Annie Van De Dungen and her husband, Pierre; his one brother, Tonny Van Balkom and his wife, Riek; his two brothers-in-laws, Piet Gevers and Leo Koppen. Albert owned and operated Albert's Carpentry in Owen Sound for 10 years prior to his retirement. Friends called at the BRIAN E. WOOD FUNERAL HOME, 250 - 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K - 3X8 (519-376-7492) on Friday afternoon and evening. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 554 - 15th Street East, Owen Sound on Saturday, January 3rd, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Father Adam Voisin officiated. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. The Vigil Service was held at the Funeral Home on Friday afternoon.
