Obituary of Mary-Jeanne Drew-McCabe

MARY JEANNE DREW-MCCABE - GREER, S.C. - Jeanne Drew-McCabe, 82, died unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, in Greer, S.C. Jeanne was born Feb. 18, 1929, to David and Rosezella Duff in Sayre, Pa. After high school, she worked for Mid Continent Airlines. She married Richard Drew in 1952 and moved to Shelburne, Vt., where she raised her children and was an active member of the community. Jeanne worked at The Shelburne Inn for several years until she became employed by IBM. She transferred to Manassas, Va., where she worked until retirement. In 1988, Jeanne opened a bed and breakfast with her husband, Thomas McCabe, in the finger lake region of New York. In 1993, Jeanne moved back to Shelburne to be close to her family and filled in at several local markets during her retirement. She followed her family to western New York in 2003 and volunteered as a senior companion for several years. Her most recent move was in 2010 to Greer, S.C., once again to be with family. Jeanne was blessed with good health and mobility her entire life. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, playing cards and a good glass of wine with friends. Jeanne is survived by her son, Sam and his wife, Mary, of Greer, S.C., and granddaughters, Jennifer Drew of Alcoa, Tenn., and Julie Drew of Greer, S.C., all previously from Shelburne; her brother, David Duff and wife, Barbara, of Huntsville, Ala.; her sister, Christine Erle and husband, Jack, of N. Andover, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews who she stayed very close to over the years. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Betty Moore; her sons, Frank and Keith; along with her husband, Thomas McCabe; and granddaughter, Jamie. Jeanne made friends everywhere she went. Gregarious and often outspoken, she had a huge presence wherever she was. Although she had many tragedies thrown at her in life, she was never bitter and she remained one of the most generous people on earth. She will be missed by many. Jeanne's request was for cremation and to have her ashes buried beside her sons at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens, Pa. Due to so many friends and family all over the country, no service is planned at this time. Please take a moment to pray for her or remember how she touched your life. She'd want you to laugh 'til you cry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, TN or online.
