Obituary of Margaret-A. Simmons

Simmons, Margaret A. REXFORD, N.Y. Margaret A. Simmons, 89, a resident of the Julie Blair Nursing Home, died on March 2, 2009 at Albany Memorial Hospital. Born June 13, 1919 in Rexford, the daughter of the late Lawrence A. and Margaret Williams Simmons. Her early education was at the Waite School- District # 7, which is presently part of the Shenendehowa School District. Margaret attended Oneida Junior High School, and was a graduate of the former Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees from the School of Education of New York University in 1939 and 1940 in the field of social sciences. Margaret also studied at Syracuse University; she completed M.A at the University at Albany, with a major in reading education and educational psychology. Margaret started her career teaching at Gillesepie-Selden Institute, a Presbyterian school in Cordele, Ga. She spent the next few years as dean and instructor for many of the young men preparing to serve in World War II. She received some of her experiences at the college (Agricultural & Technical College) and Dudley High School in Greensboro, N.C. She was on the first faculty at Shenendehowa High School and remained until her retirement after 28 years in various positions. For several years, she was the representative of the Eastern Zone for the New York State Teachers Association and also the National Education Association. A memorial service will be held, Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Rexford United Methodist Church, Main Street, Rexford, NY 12148. At the request of the family there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church.
