Obituary of Katherine Mullen

Katherine Mullen of Sparkill, NY, died very peacefully on Friday, November 1, 2002 at her home in Thorpe Village, surrounded by her family. She was 96 years old. Katherine was born on August 2, 1906 in Clahane, Glenbeigh, County Kerry, Ireland, to Daniel and Mary Riordan Clifford and was the last survivor of their seven children. She immigrated to New York in July, 1927, and on August 6, 1934, she married John Mullen of Ballisodare, County Sligo, in Holy Trinity Church in New York City. Mr. Mullen passed away in 1970. She lived in the Bronx for almost 65 years where she and her husband raised their five children in St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish. She later moved to Our Lady of Refuge Parish and then to Sparkill in 1992. Katherine devoted her life to raising her family. For several years after they were raised she worked for the NYC Board of Education in the School Lunch Program. She was an avid bingo player for many years and a longtime member of the Bronx Community College Senior Center. Locally, she was a member of the Thorpe Senior Center and the Thorpe Village Social Club. She loved being with people and helping those in need whatever way she could. Her family and all who knew her will always remember her kindnesses, her generosity and her great sense of humor, and will miss her deeply. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by five brothers and a sister; her son-in-law, Stephen Gallagher in 1984; and her youngest son, Daniel (NYPD) who died in 1975. Katherine is survived by her daughters: Kathleen Gallagher of Pelham Bay, NY, Della McAuliffe and her husband Jerry of Pearl River, NY; Sister Margie Mullen, OP, of Blauvelt, NY and her son, John Mullen of Williamsburg, Iowa. She was the cherished "Nana" of Michael, Stephen, Kevin and Timothy Gallagher, Maureen Magliocchino, Patricia Cahill, Jerry McAuliffe and Kathleen McAuliffe, and seven great-grandchildren. Katherine's Wake will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 4th and 5th, from 2 PM - 4 PM and 7 PM to 9 PM at Moritz Funeral Home, Rte. 303, Tappan, NY. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 6th in Sacred Heart Chapel, Rte 340, Sparkill, NY. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.
