HARTY After a long and full life, James Dominic Harty, 81, of Hilton Head, SC passed way on February 28, 2011 to his eternal rest with his Lord and Savior. Born on October 5, 1929 in Bridgeport, the son of John Harty and Catherine (Lee) Harty, both immigrants from County Limerick, Ireland. He graduated from Fairfield Preparatory School. He was drafted into the U.S. Army at the beginning of the Korean War. He completed Officer Candidate School in Fort Bliss, TX and then served as a Second Lieutenant in a light automatic weapons platoon in Korea as a combat forward artillery observer until the armistice; then a platoon commander in Pusan, Korea, returning home as a First Lieutenant. Jim married Margaret (Peg) O'Connor, his long time sweetheart and started their lives together. Jim started working as an apprentice at DuPont Chemicals. He attended University of Bridgeport School of Industrial Engineering and worked for Sikorsky Aircraft in Stratford, but it was his move to The Stanley Works in New Britain, where he made his mark as an authority in manufacturing and inventory control. Jim was part of a three-man team that developed the Limit Technique of calculating the right lot sizes in manufacturing and evaluating the effects of workflow on the manufacturing efficiency which evolved into another form of "Just-In Time Manufacturing". He traveled the country and aboard demonstrating this technique and convincing others of what is now a standard in manufacturing. It was at this time that he lectured for American Management Association and was Vice President of Education and Research for the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He then worked in New York City for IT&T and later as Director of Manufacturing for The Singer Company. His final job move brought his family to Endicott, NY where he worked for The Raymond Corp. the forklift truck manufacturer. He attended MIT Senior Executive Program receiving the Corporate Leadership Award. He retired in 1984 as President and COO of Raymond. He served on the M.B.A advisory board for Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY. During this successful career, Jim accomplished what he was most proud of, the family he and Peg raised together. After retiring, they found Hilton Head Island, SC as the place they wished to live and spent 25 happy years in their home on the water. Whether it was in work or his personal life, Jim would always want to know about the lives of the people he met. Jim was an avid reader and loved the growth of personal computing in our lives. He was a founding member of the Hilton Head Computing Club and was a former member of the Country Club of Hilton Head and a member of St. Francis By the Sea Parish. He would always enjoy talking to individuals and groups about the latest technology. He enjoyed relaxing while fishing, especially from their cottage in Quaker Lake, PA, and the time he spent with his children and grandchildren on their many visits to Hilton Head. Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret (Peg) of Hilton Head, SC; his son and daughter-in-law Shaun and Valerie Harty and their two children Colin and Caitlin of Woodstock, GA; his son and daughter-in-law Kevin Harty and Kim Melrose-Harty and their two sons Cameron and Connor of Endicott, NY; his daughter and son-in-law Maura Harty and Ken Hyzczcak and their two sons Daniel and Matthew of Andover, MA; and daughter and son-in-law Megen and John O'Malley and their son Michael of Melrose, MA. Jim is also survived by brother John Harty of Shelton, CT and sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Frank Spodnick of Stratford, and six nieces and one nephew. Jim was a man of strong faith, who led a good life. Jim will be missed so very much by those who loved him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 10:30 am at St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church, Hilton Head, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Catholic School Fund, 45 Beach City Road, Hilton Head, SC, 29926.
