James Dicks, 98, of Plainfield, N.J., died June 9, 2014, at home. Viewing is Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brown's Funeral Home, 122 Plainfield Ave., Plainfield, N.J., www.brownsfuneralhome.net, and Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. John's Baptist Church, 2387 Morse Ave., Scotch Plains, N.J. Funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at the church. Born in Sumter, S.C., Mr. Dicks lived in Newark, N.J., for 15 years before moving to Plainfield in 1955. He was employed as a carpenter with Local Union No. 1324, formerly Local No. 1209. He was a member of St. John's Baptist Church in Scotch Plains for over 50 years. Surviving are two sons, James E. Dicks (Maryanne) and Alonzo P. Dicks; a daughter, Marilyn E. Villamedes (John); 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a brother, Clinton Dicks; a close cousin, Howard Rose, and other relatives and friends.
