Obituary of Helen-L. Haas

Helen L. Haas, 92, of Rutland, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at The Pines at Rutland, following a long illness. She was born on December 27, 1917, in Sumner, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Bertha (Meyer) Groepper. As a child, she grew up in Iowa, later moving to Elk Mound, Wis., where she graduated salutatorian of her high school class. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago and worked as a keyboard operator. While in Chicago, she met and married Frank J. Haas on November 22, 1945, and they moved to Rutland in 1954. Mrs. Haas had been employed by the Loretto Home, the Economy Department Store and as the bookkeeper for her husband's business. Mrs. Haas was a wonderful cook and was especially known for her freshly baked pastries that she offered for sale at all MSJ Bingo nights. She also enjoyed flower gardening and was well known to raise beautiful dahlias. Mrs. Haas was a member of St. Peter Church. Survivors include a daughter, Marlene Haas of Benson; three sons, Frank T. Haas of Rutland, Carl J. Haas and his fiancée Donna Haynes of Rutland and David P. Haas and his wife Susan of Pittsford; a sister, Viola Baker of Galesburg, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Karl C. Haas, Frederick J. Haas, Aaron S. Greene, Eric F. Haas, Dr. Karen Ignatious, Katherine Munthe, Jennifer Gates, Jacqueline M. Hemple, Jennifer L. Haas; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband on March 29, 1991, and two brothers, Herb and Charlie Groepper. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at the Christ the King Church. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.
