ALBANY Dan Halloran, 78, died on Sunday evening, July 17, 2005 in his home surrounded by his family. Born in Cohoes, to Francis D. and Georgiana Cole Halloran, Dan graduated from St. Agnes School and Vincentian Institute, Class of 44. After serving in the Army Air Corps, Dan earned a B.A. and an M.Ed. from Siena College, an MPA from Syracuse U. and completed a fellowship at the U. of Virginia. Dan was a nature lover, skier, hiker, bicyclist and a loving father. He loved to hike in the Adirondacks and the Catskills with his wife and children, his brothers and friends. His love for horses began when, as a boy, he rode the backs of the draught animals he drove when he worked on the VanVranken farm. His mother fostered his love of reading and writing and he was lately working a historical novel about the Revolutionary War Battle of Oriskany. Dan was a New York State public servant for 30 years, retiring in 1983 as the tax department's personnel director. He later taught at Albany Business College, St. Rose and Siena College. Dan also wrote a weekly civil rights column in The Evangelist for over two decades and was a regular op-ed contributor to the Schenectady Gazette. He also published in many other journals. Dan was active in the CYAL, ESCOT, the Tax Alumni Club, the Friends of the Albany Public Library and was a member of its board of trustees. Dan is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Kahl Halloran; sister, Cathal L. Kennedy of Latham; brothers, Kevin C. Halloran of Melrose and S. Michael Halloran of Troy; children, Daniel W. (Stacie) of Albany, Eileen M. Halloran of Greenville, Maynel C. (Cris) DeCotes of Voorheesville, Timothy F. Halloran of Guilderland, Jonathan M. (Sarah) and David R. Halloran of New York City; grandchildren, N. Joshua Halloran, Heather L. DeCotes, Melissa A. Halloran, Colin J. DeCotes, Justin D. Halloran, Christopher D. Halloran and Nicole L. Halloran; scores of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen Street, Albany thence to St. Catherine of Siena Church, Albany at 9:30 a.m. where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Thursday 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Interment, Our Lady of Angels Cemetery. Contributions to either the Community Hospice of Albany or SMA Missionaries.
