BANGOR and SOUTH HUNTINGTON, N.Y. - Catherine Elizabeth (Welch) Norton, 92, wife of the late Raymond Norton, died March 17, 2010, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Dec. 17, 1917, in Bangor, the daughter of Joseph and Gertrude (McGivern) Welch. Betty graduated as an elementary teacher from Farmington State Normal School in 1938l; the University of Maine, Orono, in 1958 with a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in education in 1964. She taught elementary school in Maine and New York, for well over 50 years. Betty was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bangor, and a lifelong season ticket holder of the Metropolitan Opera. She was everyone's "Nana," traveling the world over and making friends wherever she went. Betty also enjoyed summering at Holbrook Pond for more than 60 years and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her son, Gary J. Norton and his wife, Pamela, of Brewer; grandchildren, Kevin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Bangor, Keith and his wife, Amy, of Brewer, Ryan and his wife, Masha, of Burlington, Vt., Regan of Burlington, Vt., Karoline and her husband, Dan, of Brunswick, Meghan of Arlington, Va., and Laura of Brewer; and three great-grandchildren, Logan, Cameron and Emma. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 19, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at St. Paul the Apostle Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bangor. Interment will be a Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
