Obituary of Betty-Godbold Warren

Betty Godbold Warren <br/> COLUMBIA, SC --> Betty Godbold Warren COLUMBIA, SC-- Betty Godbold Warren died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015. Mrs. Warren was born in DeRidder, Louisiana. She was a daughter of the late Huger Waldo Godbold, Sr. and Minta Elizabeth Polley Godbold. Raised in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, she attended Vanderbilt University where she met her future husband, John Armstrong Warren. They married in 1945 and moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she was active in the Highlands Methodist Church, Children's Hospital of Birmingham, Birmingham Girls Club, and was a nationally accredited flower show judge. In 1957, the family moved to Columbia, S.C. The Warrens joined Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, where she served as Chairman of the Altar Guild, Sunday School Teacher, and Girl Scout Leader. In 1975-1976 she served as Chairlady of the Southeastern Gas Association. Mrs. Warren served on the boards of the Palmetto Health Alliance Children's Hospital along with the Richland Lexington County Cultural Council. In 1990, Mr. and Mrs. Warren were the joint recipients of the Richland Memorial Foundation Distinguished Humanitarian Award. She was a member of Forest Lake Club, The Palmetto Club, and The Summit Club. She was a member and former Vice President of the Quadrille Club and a member of the Camellia Debutante Ball. She was a member of the Hyacinth Garden Club, having served as President, Vice President, and Secretary. Mrs. Warren was keenly interested in people, especially children, and always interested in helping those in need. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 64 years, John; her sister, Joy Godbold Moss of Meridian, Mississippi; brothers, Huger Waldo Godbold, Jr. of Hattiesburg, Mississippi and James Julian Godbold of New Orleans, Louisiana. Mrs. Warren is survived by her daughters, Minta Patrice Warren of Spartanburg, SC and Madeline Warren Fagan (Malford) of Atlanta, GA. She is survived by four grandchildren: John Warren Floyd (Nealie), Larkin Floyd Dobson (John) of Spartanburg, SC, and Malford John Fagan, Jr., and Helen Godbold Fagan of Atlanta. In addition, four great- grandchildren: Campbell Ligon Dobson, Dorothy Heron Dobson, John William Floyd, and Benjamin Gordon Floyd. The family extends its gratitude to Allison Harmon, long-time personal assistant; Dr. Dale Rutledge Hamrick; the caregivers of Senior Matters; and the staff at Laurel Crest Retirement Center of West Columbia. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 noon Monday, February 9, 2015, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held in the church parlor immediately following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
