Obituary of Betty-D. Warren


Betty D. Warren was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 10, 1919. She was one of nine children born to Benjamin Sears and Fannie Dodd Sears. In 1928, Betty moved to La Jolla, California. She was an active member of the local church known today as Prince Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church. Years later she became a member of the Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Betty worked and retired from the Scripps Hospital Research Lab with 30 years of service.Betty married John Warren (deceased) and is survived by their one son, Benjamin and his wife, Dr. Suretha Warren; sister, Jewel Washington; nieces, Patricia (Wilbur) Haynie, Jeanne' and Merijule Washington, Edwina White, Robin Holland; granddaughters, Crystal Joyce and Karen Warren; and many other relatives and friends.Betty was among 26 African American La Jolla residents featured in UCSD's 2009 Black History Month exhibit, ""Remembering Black La Jolla: Hidden Faces and Forgotten History"" at UCSD Geisel Library. She lived a vibrant life as a caring and loving person who was always there to lend a helping hand in selfless service to family, friends and neighbors. As a world traveler, Betty's perspectives on life were widely broadened. We all will truly miss her beautiful smile and the love she extended to everyone.A funeral mass will be held on August 21, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., at Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 7669 Girard Ave. La Jolla, CA, 92037.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to San Diego Hospice, www.sdhospice.org.
