Obituary of Allan-J. Miller

Miller, Allan J.Oct. 17, 1921 - Apr. 20, 2014Allan J. Miller, 92, of Venice, Florida died on April 20, 2014. He was born in the city of Beachwood, Ohio to Carl and Rhoda Miller. After graduation from Shaker Heights High School he attended Fenn College until being drafted into the Army. After qualifying exams he was placed in the mechanical engineering program at the University of Pennsylvania until he was needed in Okinawa. After discharge in 1946, he graduated from Fenn College and married Marjorie Pirtle. In October 1948, after admission to the Ohio Bar, Standard Oil Company offered him a position as a tax law analyst. He remained with Sohio for 29 and a half years with his last position being Treasurer for the company. Allan was active in many community organizations and held positions on various boards. He was a cub scout master, president of South Euclid-Lindhurst Recreation Commission, chairman of the Lay Finance Advisory Committee of the South Euclid-Lindhurst Board of Education, member of the Lyndhurst Sewer Commission Division Chairman, United Way Unit Plan Division, Cleveland, Ohio, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Lutheran Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio, Chairman Board of Directors Dyke College, Cleveland, Ohio, Chairman Lutheran Medical Center Foundation, Member Board of Trustees Christian Residences Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, Board Member United Screw and Bolt Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio, he was also active in Churches in South Euclid, Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Venice, Florida. He was elected "Man of The Year" both Cleveland State Alumni Association and Lutheran Medical Center Foundation. He is survived by his wife Marjorie, two children; James W. Miller and his wife Jean and Pat Costas and her husband John, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a niece Dr. Wendy Miller. Tidewell Hospice and Venice Presbyterian Church have been supportive and helpful during this time. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, 1:30 pm at Village on The Isle. Ewing Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
