Obituary of Alan-Gordon Kendall

OBITUARY ALAN GORDON KENDALL B.Sc., M.A., M.D.C.M., F.R.C.P.(C) F.A.C.P. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Dr. Kendall at the Lakeshore General Hospital on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at the age of eighty-seven years. Dr. Kendall's life was filled with a love of scholarship, sports, music, photography and travel. He was chosen to represent Quebec as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University where he graduated with an M.A. He returned to England to spend 4 years in active duty as a flying officer in the RCAF. He entered McGill University with the H.N. Mackay scholarship. Dr. Kendall graduated in Internal Medicine specializing in Hematology. He was Head of the Royal Victoria Blood Bank for many years. Later in his career, he joined the staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital. He also worked at the University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya when he was chosen to participate in the joint McGill-CIDA project training medical students. Dr. Kendall joined the staff of Tawam Hospital in the United Arab Emirates for 3 years as a Hematologist/Oncologist. His medical career was fulfilling with his varied experiences, research into abnormal blood types and working in many different cultures. This resulted in his publishing some 30 scientific medical papers. Sports consisted of squash as a member of the M.A.A.A. in Montreal, as well as tennis as a member of the Mount Royal Tennis Club for 50 years. He was Captain of the Oxford University Ice Hockey team and travelled extensively in Europe. He continued squash and tennis in his travels and while in East Africa he made frequent safaris including climbing Mount Kenya twice. Dr. Kendall was a loving husband of 37 years to Patricia (Fleming) Kendall. He is also survived by his brother Evan Kendall and family. It was Dr. Kendall's request to be cremated followed later by a private burial in Morin Heights, Quebec. Dr. Kendall will be remembered fondly by his family, friends and patients for his caring and compassion.
