William R. Schwartz of Briarcliff died peacefully on January 26, 2010. He was 82. A long time math teacher in the Briarcliff Public Schools, he retired in 1981. Mr. Schwartz, born January 25, 1928 in Manhattan, spent his formative years in Long Beach, Long Island, graduating from Long Beach High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946, serving 18 months as Private First Class. He graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in psychology and earned a Masters in education from Hofstra University. He was a sportswriter, owned a shoe store, and was active in local politics before settling into his career as an educator. He was an enthusiastic and colorful teacher at Briarcliff Middle School, known for his love of math, challenging lessons, and memorable style. After retiring from teaching he was a financial services advisor for VALIC. Bill was especially proud of his daughter, Wendy, and spoke often of her accomplishments to all who would listen. Later he would also express his pride in his grandchildren, Allison and Kristen. He was both an amateur photographer with a keen eye for detail and an inventive chef. He also greatly enjoyed the gridiron success of his beloved Miami Hurricanes. He is survived by his former wife, Margaret Schwartz of Briarcliff, his daughter, Wendy Gardner of Bedford, and his two grandchildren. The funeral service will be private.
