William (Bill) Childs Wilmington, NC William (Bill) Childs, 87, Wilmington, NC, a former resident of Amsterdam, NY, passed away Sunday, December, 1 2013 surrounded by his loving family. Born August 10, 1926 in Amsterdam, NY, he was the son of the late George and Edith (Hayes) Childs. He was the beloved husband of Shirley (Smith) Childs. Together they shared 61 years of marriage. Bill attended St. Mary's Academy and graduated from Amsterdam High School. He served in the US Navy as a pharmacist's mate on the USS Repose stationed in the North Pacific during World War II. He retired from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Dr. David Childs. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his daughters, Kathy Childs and Debbi (Childs) Duncan and her husband, Michael; his beloved grandson, Brad Duncan, all of Wilmington, NC; his brother-in-laws, David Smith (Lynn); Cecil Smith (Sally), Robert Smith (Carol); and sister-in-law, Linda Hanlon and several very special nieces and nephews. Bill had an extraordinary appetite for life, and used it to sample everything that was put before him. But his overriding passion in life was the care for and teaching of children. He was the happiest when in the company of children, those of his extended family and friends. In turn, the children were the beneficiaries of his laughter, his generosity, and his ability to introduce them to a world of excitement and the mysterious. To them, Bill was an awesome superhero, an adult they could trust, befriend, and never disappoint. While living in Amsterdam, Bill treasured his time spent playing golf and having coffee with his friends. Interment will take place at a later date.
