Thomas Michael Regan, devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, and respected teacher, coach, deacon, and business leader, died Tuesday, September 2nd, after a long illness. He was 84 years old. A resident of Taylors for almost two decades, he had recently moved to Easley.Tom was born September 22, 1923 in Orange, New Jersey, the younger of two sons of Emma and Thomas Sr. He graduated from Kearny High School, and attended Georgia Military Academy with the intent of continuing to the academy at West Point. However, he failed the Army's physical exam, and instead attended Montclair State Teacher's College (now Montclair State University) on a full basketball scholarship. He graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. He began his career as a teacher of accounting and business at the Washington School for Secretaries, in Newark, New Jersey. It was there that he met Barbara Meyer. They were married July 14, 1951, in a double wedding ceremony with Barbara's sister Dolores Meyer and her husband, Robert Winkler. After four years as a teacher and high school basketball coach, Tom took a job in Personnel for Peter Pan Fabrics, Inc., the beginning of a long, successful career in the garment industry. He and his family lived in Puerto Rico from 1972 to 1976, where Tom worked with Fomento, the Puerto Rico Economic Development Administration. Later, as a consultant, he traveled to Mexico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. He advised the Bank of New York on bankruptcy reorganizations, and held an executive position with Munsingwear, in Minneapolis. He and Barbara moved to the Upstate in 1985, where he worked at Stone Manufacturing, in Greenville, and at South Carolina Elastic, in Landrum. After retirement, he continued to work part time at Greenville Technical College, in the Distance Learning Center. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Tom coached Little League baseball and intramural basketball. He loved sports of all kinds, particularly college football, college basketball, and tennis. He was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church in Greenville, and served on the Communion Committee. In the years following his retirement, Tom began writing a memoir and business manual aimed at budding entrepreneurs, based on his extensive business and life experience.He is survived by his wife, Barbara Meyer Regan; his three sons, Glen, Craig, and Bruce Regan; his daughter Kelly Regan; four granddaughters, Maddi, Erin, Kelsianne, and Kendall Regan; two daughters-in-law, Teri and Michele Regan; one son-in-law, Kevin Bell; seven nieces; and three nephews. He is predeceased by his father, Thomas Sr.; his mother Emma; his daughter Nancy Leigh; and his brother, John Patrick.A memorial service will be held Friday, September 5th, at 2 p.m., in Harper Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Washington St., Greenville. He will be buried at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Tom's name to Open Arms Hospice, 1836 W.
