DARBY, THOMAS F.Thomas F. Darby, 93, a former Thornwood resident until 1976 when he retired to Rhinebeck, passed away, Wednesday, March 30, 2005 in Rhinebeck. Lt. Darby was a New York State Trooper for 27 years from 1936 to 1963. He graduated from the State Police Academy in Boston in 1939 when he was a guest of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. While serving with Troop K, Lt. Darby was first stationed to the barracks at Amenia and also worked throughout Westchester, Dutchess and Putnam Counties. He was stationed in Rhinebeck at the Mill Road Barracks from 1944 to 1947. During that time Lt. Darby was assigned to guard the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Estate whenever President Roosevelt came home to Hyde Park; he also worked with the Secret Service during the preparation and ceremonies for President Roosevelt's funeral and burial in 1945. At retirement he was a lieutenant of the New York State Police Troop K where he served as supervisor of 65 troopers of Zone 1 of the NYS Thruway, Cross Westchester Expressway, Sprain Brook Parkway and the Westchester Section of the New England Thruway. Following his retirement he worked for 10 years as an instructor for the Burns International Detective Agency in New York City. Lt. Darby also worked for the Dutchess County Fair for over 30 years until the age of 89, first as a trooper and later in parking services. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Church in Rhinebeck and was a life member of the Association of Former New York State Troopers. He enjoyed sports and was an avid hunter, golfer and bowler. He spent many hours in his garden and won ribbons for his organic vegetables at the Dutchess County Fair. Born on January 11, 1912 in Water Mill, NY, he was the son of John and Elizabeth Roftis Darby. On November 18, 1939, he married Charlotte Emma Wadlin in Rhinebeck. Mrs. Darby survives at home in Milan. He is also survived by three daughters: June Gosnell of Rhinebeck, Carol Siver of Nassau and Maureen Aemisegeo of Thornwood and a son Thomas W. Darby of Thornwood; eight grandchildren, Scott and Keith Siver, Laura Sullivan, Paul Aemisegeo, Heather, Thomas, Matthew and Kaycee Darby; seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: John, James and William Darby and his sisters: Elizabeth Costello, Ann Cole and Catherine Brennan. Visiting hours are Sunday, April 3, 2005, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM, at the Dapson-Chestney Funeral Home, 51 W. Market St., Rhinebeck. Funeral Services are Monday, 10:30 AM, at the Funeral Home. Rev. David Jolly of the Rowe United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be in Milan Union Cemetery at a time selected by the family.
