ROBERT LOUIS OWEN AND LILLIAN HOWLAND OWEN HOBE SOUND, FLORIDA After more than 70 years of marriage, Robert Louis Owen and Lillian Howland Owen, formerly of St. Paul, Minnesota, died within one week of each other at Hobe Sound, Florida where they had lived for the past 25 years. Lil died July 23 at age 94 and Bob died July 30, the day after his 95th birthday. They are survived by their daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Mark Hier, daughter-in-law, Eileen Casey, four grandchildren, Bailey Hier Desai and her husband Kevin, Harper Samantha Hier, Brooks Elizabeth Hier and Thomas Casey Owen as well as Lillian's sister, Marian Staebell and Bob's sister-in-law, Kay Owen. They were preceded in death by their son, Robert Louis Owen Jr. Bob grew up in Allendale, NJ, and Lil was born in Batavia, NY. She was a descendant of Henry Howland, an early member of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts and George Soule, a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Bob and Lil were married on New Year's Eve, 1941. Bob participated in the Normandy invasion and received five battle stars while in Europe. In 2001, he received the Normandy Freedom Medal. In 1955, they moved from Rochester, NY, to St. Paul, where they established Bob Owen Associates, a Mutual of Omaha general agency. In St. Paul, they were members of the House of Hope Presbyterian Church, the St. Paul Athletic Club and the Pool & Yacht Club. A 32nd degree Mason, Bob was a member of the Zurah Shrine and the Jesters Club. He also served on the board of directors of the Minnesota Council of Churches. An excellent bridge player, Lil belonged to the St. Paul Women's Club. In retirement, Bob and Lil moved to Hobe Sound, where they continued their lifelong passion for boating. US Power Squadron members for more than 50 years, they were founding members of the Stuart Corinthian Yacht Club. At age 84, Bob sold his last boat and took up golf at Lost Lake Golf Club. Lil also belonged to the Stuart Women's Club. For the past 16 years, Bob tutored students at Port Salerno Elementary School, recruited hundreds of other volunteers and led the effort to establish a school uniform fund. Known by hundreds of students as "Mr. Bob," he was named Volunteer of the Year by Martin County. In May 2012, Bob delivered the commencement address to the fifth grade graduates. A celebration of their lives will be held at 11:15 a.m., Sunday, September 30 at their church, Peace Presbyterian in Stuart. Memorials preferred to Peace Presbyterian Church, 4881 SE Cove Road, or Port Salerno Elementary School, 3260 SE Lionel Terrace. Paid Obituary
