POPE, MARY PAULINE SMITH Gainesville - Mary Pauline Smith Pope, age 81, of Gainesville died Friday, November 30th at Palm Garden Nursing home. Mary was born in Lunenburg, Arkansas, on April 2, 1926, to Samuel Rutledge and Hazel Faye Smith. She had two brothers, now deceased, Sylvester Rutledge and Richard Henry Smith. She came to Florida as a child and lived in Bell, Florida, then moved to Gainesville where she met and married the late Henry Elbert Smith. During this time she worked as caregiver at Sunland Training Center. Following retirement she continued to be active in the community by working in a Cotton's convenience store and as a newspaper carrier. In 1998, she married William Pope and they enjoyed six years of marriage until his death in 2004. She and Bill were very active members of the Alachua County Foster Grandparent Program where they touched the lives of countless children and teachers. Survivors include; one son, Samuel Bryant Smith married to Linda Ann of Hatchbend, Florida, two daughters, Hazel Faye Hurst of Raiford, Florida, married to Donald, and Ayleen Hope Alexander of High Springs, Florida, married to William. She is also survived by eight grand children, Robbin Ramseur, Sabrina Whittington, Melissa Walker, Angie Paarlberg, Lorrie Ann Culverson, Roy Lauramore, Wesley Shorter and Gregory Smith. She also has five great grandchildren and many step grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at 11:00 A. M., in the Chapel of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 North Main Street, with Father Michael Lacagnina, officiating. Interment will follow in Bell Cemetery, Bell, Florida.
