Margaret Hazel Gillon, 88, passed away peacefully Dec. 6, 2011, in the Norwood Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Plainfield, N.J. A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Union Baptist Church, 1088 Madison Ave.,Elizabeth, N.J. Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of services. Arrangements are in the loving care of the Nesbitt Funeral Home, 165 Madison Ave., Elizabeth. Born in Newark, N.J., Margaret relocated her family to Plainfield, N.J., in 1967. She was employed as a civilian Department of Defense employee at the Picatinny Arsenal, the Ideal Toy Company, and the Union County Nutritional Program until her retirement as a site manager at the Senior Citizens Center, formerly located at Richmond Towers in Plainfield. Margaret's civic commitments were very important to her. She was affiliated with the Eastern Stars, Daughters of the Elks, and the NAACP. She was president of the Helping Hands and other community based groups. Due to her commitment in serving the community, she was recognized and presented many awards and citations by social service agencies and organizations. Celebrating her accomplishments and carrying on her legacy are her daughter, Evelyn Gillon of Plainfield, N.J.; her brother, Gilbert Anthony, of Newark, N.J.; 20 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that you make a donation to the Union Baptist Church A. A. Lewis Scholarship Fund.
