HARDING, John Henry To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. John died peacefully on January 20th, at Saanich Peninsula Hospital, after a short illness. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan March 16, 1917 and came to B.C. with his parents when he was three. Predeceased by his first wife, Jane and second wife, Phyllis and third wife, Betty. He is survived by his children, Debra (Ed McLean), Donald (Teri), Brian (Victoria) and Norman (Heather); 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. John was employed by the B.C. Department of Highways from 1944-1979. He was B.C.'s first traffic engineer and was involved in the design and planning of B.C.'s major highways including the design of the advance amber warning lights at traffic intersections. He sang in choirs most of his life including church choirs, Barbershop and lastly the Arion Choir, stopping only when his mobility required it. John's cabin at Shawnigan Lake was a special place for him. Family and friends have many memories of time spent there. He loved the water, either swimming or boating and enjoyed many canoe and power boating trips. He travelled extensively to many destinations around the world, usually where it was warmer than home. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 9th at 1:30 at St. George the Martyr, 3909 St. Georges Lane, Cadboro Bay, Saanich with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. or Alzheimer Society of B.C. 576973
