James W. Age 84, of South Place in Corning, NY, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at Corning Hospital. James was born in Niles Valley, Pennsylvania on March 26, 1922, to George and Daisy (Peters) Sample. He married Ila McUmber in 1943 and was preceded in death by her in 2004. Jim graduated from C.F.A. and loved playing baseball for the Corning Red Sox. He had been employed by Corning Glass Works at the holding point in Horseheads for many years as a supervisor. He just received his 65 year pin from Corning Inc. He was an avid rose gardener, and had over 200 rose bushes. He enjoyed watching college basketball and was a Yankee fan. He enjoyed making his daily trip to Coats Convenient on his red scooter for his free cup of coffee from his grandson Chris. He is survived by his loving daughter, Carol Prince of Corning; a granddaughter, Kimberly Prince of Atlanta, GA; a grandson, Christopher Coats of Corning; several nieces and nephews; and the family cat, Mac. A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, August 7, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. in Coopers Plains Cemetery with the Reverend Randy Ginnan officiating. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Salvation Army Citadel, 32 East Denison Parkway, Corning, NY, 14830, or to the First United Methodist Church, 144 Cedar Street, Corning, NY, 14830.
