MCGUIRE-Irene Laura McGuire died peacefully in her sleep February 8, 2005. Irene was born in Kipling, Sk. in 1914, the oldest of seven children born to Lumina and Louis Krecsy. She spent her childhood and attended school in Kipling. After graduating from high school she went to Normal School in Regina and became a teacher. She returned to the Kipling area to begin her teaching career in a one room school. It was there she met her future husband Glenn McGuire whom she married in 1937. The family moved to Oxbow in 1945. Her six children grew up and went to school in Oxbow. Irene had a strong commitment to learning, an appreciation of nature and an interest in history, art and travel which has enriched the lives of her children and grandchildren. Irene valued her many friends with whom she shared interests and activities bridge, drama, singing. These produced several lifelong friendships that Irene treasured. She and her husband were long-time members and supporters of the CCF/NDP. After a period as full-time mother, Irene returned to teaching in 1956. She upgraded her teaching certificate through summer classes and developed her qualifications to teach French by spending summers studying in France. Irene found great satisfaction and enjoyment in teaching. Affectionately known as Ma McGuire to many of her students, she valued her relationships with students and staff. She retired from teaching in 1979 but continued to contribute to the community. She served as mayor of Oxbow and participated or volunteered in many community organizations and associations. Irene is predeceased by her husband Glenn, her daughter Sheila, her sisters Kathleen, Madeleine and brother George. She is survived by five children: Doretha (Bob), George (Lynda), Barry (Marion), Jeanne, and Allan; ten grandchildren: Shannon, Erin, Brennan (Sheila), Roberta, Jim, (Doretha), Colleen, Sheelo, Michael, (George), Megan, (Barry), and Hayden (Allan); eight great grandchildren; her sisters Helen, Louise and brother Gerry. Irene was cremated at her request. A memorial service will be held this summer in Oxbow at a date to be announced.
