POTTER, Henry Bascam, 96,of Hudson, Fla., a pioneer of the New Port Richey area, died Monday, April 7, 2008, at Regional Medical Center in Hudson, Fla. He was born in Bowling Green, Fla. and relocated to New Port Richey in 1933 from Tampa. In 1933, he opened one of the early grocery stores in the area, by the name of Potter Brothers, and later joined IGA (Independent Grocers Association). When the store moved to a new and larger location on Main Street in 1952 the name was changed to Potter Brothers IGA. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club International, Chamber of Commerce, and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite. He also held the Citizen of the Year Award, and was crowned King Pithla in 1976. Mr. Potter served as the fire chief for the New Port Richey Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, and Community Hospital. He was on the founding board of New Port Richey/North Bay Hospital. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. Mr. Potter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Edith Whittington Potter of Hudson; daughters, Audrey Stevenson of New Port Richey, Barbara Van Winkle, and son-in- law, Larry Van Winkle, of Bradenton, Fla.; and a son, Clarence Whitfield "Whit" Potter of Washington DC. He is also survived by grandchildren, Richard Stevenson, Robin Stevenson Barrus and Joan Johnson Anderson; great-grand-children, Daniel C. Barrus, Jeremiah R. Barrus, Samuel Robert Morrissey and McKinna Anderson; one great-great-grandchild, Kaydin Morrissey; niece, Ann Potter; and nephews, Judson Potter and Tom Edwards. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday April 10, at North/ Meadowlawn Funeral Home in New Port Richey. Interment will follow at Meadowlawn Memorial Gardens.
